La Samaritaine
La Samaritaine is the legendary Parisian department store founded in 1870 by Ernest Cognacq. Its glorious Art Nouveau peacock frescoes and Art Deco façade were restored in a monumental renovation and reopened by DFS/LVMH in 2021, alongside a luxury hotel and a wave-glass building by SANAA facing the Rue de Rivoli.
From 1870 department store to LVMH landmark
Founded in 1870 by Ernest Cognacq and Marie-Louise Jaÿ, La Samaritaine grew into one of the great Paris department stores. Between 1905 and 1928 the architects Frantz Jourdain and Henri Sauvage gave it its celebrated Art Nouveau ironwork and Art Deco façade, including the peacock frescoes and the great glass-roofed hall.
A monumental restoration
Closed in 2005 for safety reasons, the store was acquired by LVMH and reopened in 2021 after a sixteen-year, landmark restoration. The project by the Japanese studio SANAA added a rippling glass façade along the Rue de Rivoli, and the complex now houses the DFS department store, offices, social housing, a crèche and the Cheval Blanc Paris hotel.
Good to know
Entry to the store is free, and the upper floors offer some of the finest rooftop views in central Paris. It sits steps from the Pont Neuf and the Louvre.
