Sainte-Chapelle
The Sainte-Chapelle is a jewel of Rayonnant Gothic, built by Louis IX (Saint Louis) around 1248 to house the relics of the Passion. Its upper chapel is enclosed by fifteen towering stained-glass windows — over a thousand scenes bathing the space in coloured light.
Louis IX’s holy chapel
Built in just seven years and consecrated in 1248, the Sainte-Chapelle was raised by King Louis IX (Saint Louis) to house the relics of Christ’s Passion — above all the Crown of Thorns — which he had acquired at enormous cost. It stands within the medieval royal palace on the Île de la Cité, today the Palais de Justice.
A cage of light
The upper chapel is one of the supreme achievements of Rayonnant Gothic architecture: fifteen stained-glass windows, each over 15 metres high, wrap the walls in more than a thousand biblical scenes, so that the stone almost disappears behind a shimmering cage of coloured light.
Good to know
The chapel is a paid, ticketed visit; a combined ticket with the neighbouring Conciergerie is good value. It is busiest around midday — come on a bright morning to see the windows at their best.
