Fondation Cartier

The Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain — the contemporary-art institution created by the Cartier maison in 1984 — reopened in October 2025 in a luminous glass building designed by Jean Nouvel at 2 Place du Palais-Royal, directly opposite the Louvre. Vast mobile platforms let the galleries be reinvented for every exhibition.

A new home at the Palais-Royal

In October 2025 the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain opened a major new home at 2 place du Palais-Royal, facing the Louvre. Founded in 1984, the foundation moved here from its celebrated glass building on the Boulevard Raspail in the 14th arrondissement.

Jean Nouvel’s transformation

The architect Jean Nouvel — who designed the foundation’s earlier home — reinvented the interior of the 1855 building that once housed the Grands Magasins du Louvre and, later, the Louvre des Antiquaires. Behind the historic façade, movable platforms and some 6,500 m² of exhibition space create one of the largest contemporary-art venues in central Paris.

Good to know

The foundation stages temporary exhibitions of contemporary art; entry is ticketed and timed slots are recommended. It sits directly opposite the Louvre, beside the Palais-Royal.
