Boutique Chanel — 31 rue Cambon

31 rue Cambon is the cradle of the house of Chanel. Gabrielle « Coco » Chanel opened her boutique here in 1918 and lived in the apartment above, reached by the famous mirrored staircase from which she watched her shows. The store remains one of the most iconic fashion addresses in Paris.

Where Chanel began

31 rue Cambon is the historic heart of the house of Chanel. Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel opened her Paris boutique here in 1918, and it was from this address that she reshaped twentieth-century fashion — the little black dress, jersey suits, costume jewellery and, in 1921, the perfume Chanel N°5.

The mirrored staircase

Above the boutique lie Coco Chanel’s private salons and, higher still, the apartment she kept until her death in 1971. The building’s famous mirrored staircase is where she would sit, out of sight, to watch the reaction to her collections reflected from every angle.

Good to know

The ground-floor boutique is open to shoppers; the apartment above is private. The address sits moments from Place Vendôme, the Ritz and the luxury houses of the Rue Saint-Honoré.
